Next I needed a studio and spoke to a friend of mine called Francesco Cameli who owns Sphere Studios in Battersea. Sphere is a fabulous studio complex that has had an impressive client list in the short time it has been open, including work for Duran Duran, Elton John and many more.
I didn't have much time to play with (nor very much budget) so every second was going to be precious. It was agreed that we would take 4 days in the massive Studio 1 where we could set up as a whole band and play the songs live together. Not only was this the way I wanted the album to "feel" but with so little time, it was the only way we would actually be able to finish everything in time.
The legendary Glyn Johns had been in the week before recording/producing Andy Fairweather-Low. Glyn has worked with The Beatles, The Steve Miller Band, Led Zeppelin amongst hundereds of others and he is particularly famous for his drum recording technique. This uses only 3 microphones to capture the drums and relies on having a great drummer and a great live room to record in, but means that "mixing" the drum sound is very easy as all the balance and performance has already been captured.
