My first serious attempt at forming a Band around my songs was Radio Java. Starting in the early 80's we gigged all over London until getting a deal with a small French Owned Label here. Bright Pink Label..say no more!!! They had other diverse artists with chart success and I really thought that this was THE ONE.
We made the Album at Abbey Road before all the major re-fits, recording mainly in Studio 3 (the Floyd Studio) but also working in Studio 2 (Oh MY GOD...THE BEATLES had been in there!!!!) and the Penthouse. Studio 1 was too big for us to do anything except pretend that we were performing ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE examining the old STUDER 4 track machines gathering dust in the corner (yes STILL there from Sgt Pepper) then playing a little football!!! (don't tell EMI).
Album done, it was launched with a budget of about £30.00 (not including postage). And almost at the same moment Queen released RADIO GAGA, suddenly the name RADIO JAVA was not a good choice!!!
We were Slowly drowning in a sea of apathy when a passing Dutch DJ came to London, bought a copy of our second single FOOL (Slow orchestral ballad) and started playing it. Without warning EVERYBODY in Holland wanted to play it and within 3 weeks it was number 1 in the Airplay charts!.
We Flew over to perform on the Xmas Top Pop show with Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Slade, then followed that with more tv and radio promo.
Needless to say the record company missed all the promo, nobody could actually BUY the record and it finally sank without a Tracy or Sharon to purchase it and make us famous and rich!!!
